How do you move house in a month?

With or without the help of a professional, moving in a month is perfectly possible. Especially if you can take advantage of the reduced notice period of one month (instead of 3 months). If you're moving out on your own, one month is enough for a small apartment and no children. But as soon as you start to settle down in life, and even more so with a family to support, it's inevitably more complicated. Unless you call in a professional mover, who can save you precious time.

When is it possible to move within a month?

If you wish to terminate a rental agreement, you will no doubt be aware that you must respect a legal notice period. Often defined in the contract, this notice period is generally 3 months. In some cases, the notice period is limited to one month.

Termination of a rental lease: when can it be reduced to one month?

There are many reasons for reducing the notice period to 1 month. They may relate to the property itself or to the occupant's personal situation.

Housing-related reasons for terminating a lease in one month

One month's notice is required for rental properties:

  • if the property is located in a tense urban area, where demand outstrips supply;
  • for furnished accommodation.

Causes for terminating a lease within one month, depending on the tenant's situation

The legal notice period may also be reduced from 3 months to 1 month for one of the following reasons:

  • involuntary job loss (redundancy or contractual redundancy) or professional transfer;
  • a first job or a return to work after redundancy ;
  • RSA or disabled adult allowance;
  • allocation of social housing ;
  • a state of health justifying a change of address.

If you find yourself in one of these situations, you can move out within one month of notifying your landlord or the rental agency. As soon as you're sure you'll have to move out, you must immediately notify your departure by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt. Then the countdown begins! You've only got 30 days to move...

Need to move in a month? Get organized to be on time!

If you haven't been able to anticipate the move, it's best to be well organized so that you're ready on D-day, especially if you're busy during the week. Between the boxes to be filled and the administrative formalities, you need to proceed methodically to avoid getting overwhelmed.
A month goes by very quickly, so you need to be efficient in your preparations. If you're moving on your own, you're on your own. With a professional mover, you can save time by entrusting the packing, for example.

Moving out on your own: preparations right up to D-day

Start by setting a moving date and reserving a truck as soon as possible, so you can be sure of having a vehicle on D-day. To find the right removal van for your needs, you need to estimate the volume of boxes and furniture to be transported.

Then prepare the boxes methodically, room by room. Make sure the boxes are strong enough for heavy objects, and use bubble wrap for fragile items. When the boxes are full, make a note of their contents on a visible side of the box to avoid wasting time looking for your belongings in your new home.

As well as packing, you also need to take care of the formalities involved in the move. You'll need to contact several organizations before the big day:

  • energy suppliers to close the meters in your old home and sign new contracts for your new address;
  • the municipal services in charge of roads, in order to have a parking space where the truck can be loaded and unloaded on the day of the move;
  • the local administrations with which you are in contact and the Post Office for mail forwarding...

A few days before the move, everything must be ready. The day before the move, unplug all appliances, including the fridge, which must be empty and defrosted for transport.

On the big day, have a good breakfast so that you're fit and efficient when loading and unloading the truck. After tidying up and protecting the day's crockery, all you have to do is fill the truck and unload it safely. Don't forget your cleaning equipment, and read the meters before you leave, so you can close your energy contracts.
Then all you have to do is take possession of your new apartment. But then you'll have more than a month to finalize the move!

You use a removal company: the anti-stress formula for moving in a month

You can save precious time on preparations by opting for a moving package that includes packing of your personal effects. This will allow you to concentrate on the administrative formalities and prepare your children for the changes to come.

If you prefer to do the packing yourself, your mover can provide you with the necessary packaging, saving you precious time. What's more, professionals can provide you with quality boxes and packaging perfectly adapted to the objects to be transported (for transporting bottles if you have a cellar to move, for example).

If you are planning to entrust the move to a professional, contact the companies as soon as possible to obtain a quote and sign a contract as quickly as possible. Moving is a seasonal activity, which can take more or less time, depending on the season. School vacations are particularly popular, especially during the summer months when children can avoid changing schools during the year.
