Did you know that nearly 3 million French people move house every year? That's why it's so important to choose the right date for your move, to ensure the availability of professionals and benefit from the best prices. So when should you plan your move? Les Gentlemen du Déménagement has the answer!
Moving: a highly seasonal business
Unfortunately, not all seasons are ideal for moving. Three periods characterize the sector: high season, mid season and low season.
High season
It runs from June to the end of August, and accounts for the vast majority of moves. For most people, this seems to be the most favorable time of the year: fewer family constraints, fewer professional obligations, more time to prepare for the move and move-in, good weather conditions, etc.., it's also the one with the highest prices !
As moving professionals are in high demand, booking schedules are overloaded and prices can double. If you're moving during the high season, you'll need to request quotes 3 to 4 months in advance, otherwise you won't find any service providers available when the time comes.
Mid-season
In spring, from March to May, movers' schedules are less busy. So it's easier to find an available professional, study different quotes and book a date that suits you. As demand drops, so do moving costs. It's an excellent time to move with peace of mind.
Low season
As you can see, the winter season, from September to March, is undoubtedly the best time to consider a move. A quiet period for professionals, you can easily choose your moving date just one month in advance and benefit from very attractive prices !
Be aware, however, that weather conditions can complicate the transportation of your belongings. It's a good idea to take out damage insurance, because in the event of force majeure, if your belongings are damaged, the removal company won't be considered at fault.
Moving at the best time: other constraints to be aware of
Now you know the best time to move. To further optimize cost of your moveBut there are a few things you need to know. Even in low season, some periods are more popular than others!
Avoid moving on a weekend, as you'll be more likely to call on the services of a removal company. The end of the month is also to be avoided, as it marks the end of rental leases. The same applies to the end of the calendar year, when property and council taxes are due on January 1st. And don't move during a school vacation period, as families with children tend to prefer school-free weeks to change their place of residence.
Finally, the more flexible you are with your moving dates, the greater the savings.
Zen moving at the best time
As well as choosing the right season, if you want to move with peace of mind without spending too much, it's best to choose a day at the beginning of the week. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are much less popular than others. Plan your move well in advance so that your mover can respond favorably to your request.
Note that some companies include a day off for moving in their collective bargaining agreement: an opportunity not to be overlooked if you want to take advantage of a move at the beginning of the week!
